The 117 acre common in Chipperfield has some waymarked woodland walking trails. Features on the common include eight veteran Spanish sweet chestnut trees, two early Bronze Age burial mounds and the Apostles Pond which is surrounded by willow trees. You can start your walk from the car park at the northern end of the site. From here you can pick up a network of paths taking you across the common. After your walk you can enjoy a stroll around the pretty village of Chipperfield with its nice pubs, cricket pavilion, war memorial, village green and old churches.

Follow the Erewash canal through south Derbyshire on this waterside cycling and walking route. The canal runs from Trent Lock near Long Eaton to the Langley Mill (Great Northern) basin. You can follow the towpath all the way on your bike or on foot. It's a nice easy route that runs for about 12 miles so it's a good family cycle ride or long walk. On the way you'll pass old mills, pretty locks and a number of stone bridges. The areas around Nutbrook Junction and Trowell Marsh are nature reserves where you can look out for a wide variety of wildlife. There's also nice views of the River Erewash and the surrounding countryside. The canal forms part of the larger Erewash Valley Trail so it's easy to extend your exercise on this circular route.

Rippling across the crags between Windermere and Coniston, Grizedale is 8,000 acres of mixed forest laced with tracks and endowed with a renowned series of outdoor sculptures.

Grizedale Forest

This circular walk will take you and your pooch through the best of the Herts countryside, and over the Buckinghamshire border before returning to where you began in Sarratt. Part of this walk is inside the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty so you can be sure that you will be surrounded by beautiful landscapes and open country, which your dog will probably enjoy running through rather than admiring. They might also take a paddle in the chalk stream or river along this route, which would be a welcome cool dip on a warm day.

Sarratt

Explore 1600 acres of moor, gritstone edges and extensive woods with dramatic views over the Derwent Valley. A wonderful place to discover spectacular views of the Peak District, ancient woods, meadows, parkland and heather moorland. Explore the unusual sites of Longshaw's past, from millstone quarries to packhorse routes. The visitor centre, housed in the Shooting Lodge, is the ideal starting point for Longshaw and the Peak District. Note: Moorland Discovery Centre only open to the public for certain events and during school holidays.
